A small percentage of students have challenging behaviors that require immediate resolution. All students deserve a resolution, as soon as possible. The remaining student population may have potential challenges in their future, although it seems they may have none at the moment. If they are not motivated toward success in school, their emotions may not be able to keep pace and cope with the challenges ahead. Challenges may appear to evolve later, but may be brewing under the surface and undetected without preventative school counseling.
Preventive school counseling adapts by reaching out to all students, and analyzes an identifiable need for the present situation, preventing further developments.
Helping develop students’ strengths by turning their focus toward their best self are solutions provided by the preventive school counseling model.
Second, teachers are free to be more effective in class, knowing students’ strengths and are able to channel behavior accordingly. Better student-teacher relationship comes from knowing a students’ interests beyond academics. Students want to show and voice their strengths, skills and be understood by their teachers.
Better relationships will improve the effectiveness of teachers’ activities in out of class.
