Dear Educators and Subscribers:
I decided to exclude the topic of forgiveness from the last newsletter about "creating a positive school atmosphere" because it holds significant value. Instead, I planned to write a separate newsletter specifically dedicated to this subject.
Forgiving in K-12 schools can significantly impact students and the school community. When students are taught to forgive, they learn to let go of grudges and resentments, which can improve their mental and emotional well-being. Forgiveness also promotes empathy and compassion, encouraging students to understand and support each other and creating a positive and inclusive school environment. Furthermore, when students see forgiveness modeled by their teachers and peers, they are more likely to internalize this behavior and apply it to their own lives, leading to better conflict resolution and interpersonal relationships. Overall, forgiving in schools can create a culture of understanding, respect, and acceptance, which can benefit students, staff, and the school community in numerous ways.

In addition to its impact on students and the school community, forgiving in schools can also have a broader societal impact. By promoting forgiveness as a positive and necessary aspect of interpersonal relationships, schools can help cultivate a generation of more empathetic, compassionate, and forgiving individuals in their personal and professional lives. This, in turn, can lead to a more peaceful and harmonious society where conflicts are resolved through forgiveness and understanding rather than aggression and retaliation. By teaching forgiveness and practicing teachers in schools, we can instill in our future leaders the importance of empathy, forgiveness, and respect, creating a more compassionate and just world for generations to come.
Embrace Forgiveness: It is a Pathway to Our Collective Happiness and Success. Dr. Ugur.
Forgiving in schools can also have an impact on academic achievement. When students carry emotional baggage, such as anger or resentment, it can be difficult for them to focus on their studies and perform well in the classroom. However, by learning to forgive and let go of negative emotions, students can free up their mental and emotional energy to concentrate on schoolwork. Additionally, forgiving can improve relationships with teachers and peers, leading to better communication, cooperation, and collaboration. Building powerful relationships with others will help them to be psychologically healthy. This can create a more positive and supportive learning environment, ultimately enhancing academic performance and success. Therefore, integrating forgiveness into the school culture can have a positive impact not only on the well-being of students but also on their academic achievements. So, it all significantly impacts creating a positive school atmosphere.
An Experienced Story
Last semester, I had an experience that I want to share with you. While on my way to a teacher launch at the school, I came across one of my students who was crying loudly on the stairs. She was in the company of the school's social worker and one of her friends. This was before noon, and it was obvious that something serious had happened. When I asked her what was wrong, she explained that her teacher had confiscated her phone during class because she had been warned several times. The teacher had threatened to give the phone to her father. When I checked on her an hour later, she was still crying in the social worker's room. She was worried that her father would not allow her to use a smartphone up to graduation from high school if he found out her phone had been confiscated since he had received warnings from other schools before. Although I was concerned about what would happen, I couldn't follow up on what happened during the day. However, the next day, the student came to my office during lunchtime, looking happy. She explained that her teacher had forgiven her on the condition that she wouldn't use her phone in class again. She also said that she had grown to love her teacher despite not positive feeling that way before. She added that if her teacher had informed her parent, she would never have been a good student and wouldn't have loved her teacher anymore. In summary, this experience highlights the power of forgiveness.
It's important to remember that forgiveness can profoundly impact both the teachers who forgive and the student who is forgiven. In this case, the student learned from her mistake and was able to mend her relationship with her teacher. This demonstrates the importance of empathy and understanding and the potential for positive change when we choose to forgive. This is another criterion for creating a positive school atmosphere in the school.
